For this week’s Top Ten Tuesday we’re talking about books we’ve read recently that are out of our comfort zone. As you may or may not know we are huge fans of fantasy first and foremost. We *cough Kelly* sometimes have a hard time reading other genres and we’re trying to branch out into other genres *cough Kelly* As always Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
Kelly’s Reads
The Night We Said Yes by Lauren Gibaldi
Like Melissa said before, I am a huge fantasy reader. That being said, I usually never read contemporary novels save for this one.
Rebel Mechanics by Shanna Swendson
I haven’t read anything like Rebel Mechanics, which is a historical fiction/ steampunk novel. I really enjoyed this one.
Sweet Madness by Trish Leaver & Lindsey Currie
Historical fictions are way out of my comfort zone, but I did end up enjoying this one.
Lauren’s Reads
Devoted by Jennifer Mathieu
This book focused a lot on religion, which is not something I usually read.
I’ll Meet You There by Heather Demetrios
I usually don’t read contemporary, which is why this book and Since You’ve Been Gone are out of my comfort zone.
Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson
The Selection Series by Kiera Cass
I’m not a huge fan of the reality show “The Bachelor”, so originally I didn’t want to read a book based on the same idea.
Melissa’s Reads
Something Strange and Deadly series by Susan Dennard
I was never big on zombies. Also after watching The Walking Dead and not liking, I wasn’t sure if I would like the series. Clearly I was in for one helluva ride and adore this series.
This Monstrous Thing by Mackenzi Lee
Never ever read a historical fiction/ steampunk book before. However, as it is also a retelling, I was definitely curious. I am so glad picked it up!
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Yup! I just put this book on this list. Why you ask? Because I am not a huge fan of dystopian books even though I read a select few. I usually have no interest in post apocalyptic/ fight to the death books. If I do find one I may be interested in, I am SUPER picky. Long story short, this was on my radar for years and I didn’t care for it. But eventually I was worn down by friends and slight curiosity and read THG last year. It was actually pretty good.
Let us know what books you’ve read recently that aren’t typical a genre you read in the comments below!
Oooh! Yes, The Selection is indeed like The Bachelor! 😀 😀 😀
Nice list, Kelly, Lauren and Melissa!

That is why I never thought I would enjoy it. But I actually really liked it. America drove me nuts at times, but it was still a fun read.

Yes. The first three books are all awesome. The fourth one isn’t, though.

Wooo!!! Somebody else who decided to read The Hunger Games late to the party!! I just read the books in the last year and liked them a lot. I think it was all the hype and copy-catting that turned me off to the idea of it. I also want to read Devoted bc I really liked that author’s other book.

SAME! My friends in college had told me about Battle Royale way before The Hunger Games. I never watched the film, but then when The Hunger Games came out I was shocked. I haven’t decided if I’ll pick up the other 2 books yet.

Tbh,I very rarely read out of my fave genres of UF/PNR/fantasy.I’ll occasionally read scifi but even those are few and far between. It’s not because I think that contemporary/other genre books are bad, it’s just harder for me, personally, to get into them for some reason and I’ve gotten to that point where I know what I like and I’m not going to waste my time reading something that doesn’t interest me just to be able to say that I’ve read it.I do, however, make exceptions but the book not only had to really grab my attention/interest but it also has to get great reviews from bloggers who usually blog about other genres. It’s been quite a while since this has happened but the last group of contemporaries that I read (and ended up LOVING) were:
The Secret Life of Bees
The Help
The Fault in Our Stars
The Perks of Being A Wallflower
Silver Linings Playbook
My almost teen daughter loves the Selection series but I hate everything about the bachelor so I won’t be reading the series, probably ever but I’ve enjoyed many a zombie book (though weirdly enough,I hated PP&Z) so I’ll probably give the Something Strange & Deadly series a try once more books are out.
Thanks for a great Tuesday post! 🙂

Don’t worry, Kelly! Sticking with a genre just means you know what you like 🙂 Lord knows I am guilty of it too :p

That is very true! She had been saying for a while she wanted to start reading some contemporary so I’m just waiting for that day it happens!

Glad you enjoyed The Hunger Games even if it isn’t in your usual genre.

Great list! I’m so happy that you loved SSaD!! I have read The Hunger Games, not because it’s out of my comfort zone, but because so many people love it and I’m worried I won’t. I haven’t read most of these books, but some are on my TBR!

I was also worried I wouldn’t like it either. But I gave it 4/5 so it’s okay!

Ooh, I definitely agree with I’ll Meet You There! When I first got into YA books, contemporary was my least favorite but then I read I’ll Meet You There and loved it and I’ve just been reading so much more contemporary books since. 🙂

I’ve never read anything Steampunk either, it’s never been something I have been interested in and I don’t know how much I would enjoy it. I don’t do Zombies either!
But I loved the Hunger Games, I’m a massive fan of dystopian worlds, I find them fascinating. Since You’ve Been Gone has been on my TBR forever! I really should read that one!

I read to escape reality, so I’m bad about not reading any contemporary! I will say I enjoyed Daughter of Deep Silence and Written in the Stars! Although it’s almost cheating because 1 is a thriller and 1 is set in another country so they don’t remind me of my own life lol! I really need to get my hands on This Monstrous Thing, I’ve heard great things! It’s funny that the 3 of you aren’t big fans of steampunk! You should try Mechanica though, steampunk Cinderella and the relationships are very cool and not the usual!!

I have Mechanica! I just haven’t picked it up yet.

I love to escape in books as well! That’s why I mainly love to read fantasy! I’ve been wanting to read Mechanica but haven’t gotten around to it yet, hopefully soon I can.
