Teal Trick or Treat: YA Masquerade Ball

For the last few months I’ve dedicated time to a wonderful project started by Nori (Read, Write, Love).  The Book Bloggers Creativity Project gathered various bloggers together to work on a group project.  We were split in teams and I’ve been fortunate to work with a lovely group of 10 other bloggers.  Teal Trick or Treat is a 10 day feature leading up to Halloween with a variety of posts dedicated to the paranormal and horror of the holiday’s history, culture, films, and books, as well as a giveaway hosted by the lovely Rachel.

I had to do a little reinvention for my blog post, so I decided to plan Halloween masquerade ball.  I was reminded of the Cinderella movie, Ever After featuring Drew Barrymore.  Everyone at the ball was dressed in elegant animal costumes, and Drew’s character makes it to the ball as a beautiful butterfly.

With a bookish twist I came up with costume ideas for popular YA couples who’d attend the ball together.  I had too much fun on Polyvore creating these outfits for the women in charge.  The men have say when it comes to deciding what to wear. Well with one exception, but you’ll just have to find out who I’m talking about.

Aelin Ashryver Galathynius & Rowan Whitethorn

                                   Tan Choo dress

Rising from the ashes, Aelin walks away from her old life and embraces her new role as Queen of Terrasen.  She’s determined to take back what is rightfully hers and release magic back into the world. What better way to show it off than by embodying the phoenix which symbolizes rebirth, strength, transformation, and immortality. Rowan may not be keen on wearing such a ridiculous mask, but would most likely be met with a knife thrown at him if he objected. After all, Aelin is a fire-breathing bitch queen and bows to no one.

Alina Starkov & Mal Ostrev

                          dress by Alexander McQueen

The white stag represents strength, grace, peace, and leadership. The people of Ravka turn to Alina to lead them out of the darkness and bring about peace by eliminating The Fold and later the Darkling.  Alina, being the Sun Summoner and wears the antlers of Morozova’s stag, it felt right to mask her as a white stag. Mal probably would counter she should be the doe and he the stag, but he’d probably get in some trouble.

Percy Jackson & Annabeth Chase

dress by Elie Saab

Percy would definitely try to take control of outfitting Annabeth as a water nymph for the masquerade, but would be met with some hostility. Annabeth would be outraged and refuse to fulfill whatever crazy fantasy Percy had. (Not that he would, but being the son of Poseidon who knows)  Percy will just have to get over himself even though he was the chosen one.

As a daughter of Athena, the goddess of Wisdom who is represented by an owl, it makes perfect sense for Annabeth to choose this over a water nymph.  However, part way through the night, Annabeth would definitely ditch the heels and dance barefoot.

Blue Sargent & Richard Gansey III

dress by Zac Posen

There really was no question as to what Blue and Gansey would go as.  The raven represents wisdom and knowledge.  It is also believed that ravens foretell the future as well as reveal omens and signs.

I think Blue would definitely recreate this dress herself to be cost efficient, though something tells me she’d have to fight Gansey about it.  He clearly doesn’t stand a chance.  She also would definitely join Annabeth and  kick her shoes off after all of five minutes.

Eleanor & Daniel Sheridan

dress by Badgley Mischka

I’ve recently met Eleanor Fitt in Something Strange and Deadly this year, so I wasn’t too sure how to best represent her.  Fellow Truthwitch Street Team member Julia was kind enough to lend a hand. Because of Eleanor’s rebellious behavior and breaking societal norms, she could be best represented by a salmon.  She’s feels suffocated by her overbearing mother, the confines of her house, and corset; she wants to be free. It’s the perfect fit for Miss Fitt (haha) as salmon symbolizes determination, transformation, and courage.  She’d also be thrilled there is no need for a corset with this dress. I’m sure Daniel would mutter something about dressing all fancy, but would suck it up anyway.

Rhoma Grace & Hysan Dax

dress by Badgley Miskcha

This was also a no brainer, because Rho is from House Cancer so obviously she’d wear blue and represent the ocean and the crab zodiac. I think Hysan would be all for the flashy mask and wearing fancy duds.

Feyre & Tamlin

dress by Monique Lhullier

Fell in love with this sexy silver dress that I had to use it! Basically created the outfit first before assigning it to Feyre.  Since Tamlin can shift into a wolf, this costume made the most sense.  Like wolves, Feyre remains fiercely loyal to Tamlin, is intelligent, and compassionate.  Now I know in the book Tamlin already has a mask he cannot remove, however this is my made up fantasy ball so he’s switching masks.

Simon Spier & Blue

tuxes by Versace

Including Simon and Blue was a must for me!  I chose both of them to represent the badger because Simon is a huge Harry Potter nerd. According to the quiz he took for Stefani’s guest post (Caught Red Handed), Simon’s in Hufflepuff. Hufflepuffs are known to value hard work, dedication, patience, loyalty, and fair play. This is definitely Simon in a nutshell.  I think the boys would have a lot of fun at the masquerade ball.

Laura Jean Song-Covey & Peter Kavinsky

dress by Oscar de la Renta

For Laura Jean, I was debating between a cat or a rabbit.  After confirmation from my co-podcaster Juliana, I went with a cat.  Laura Jean definitely has the attributes of a cat. She is clever, independent, and selective. I had to put Peter in a black cat mask because when I first met him, I felt he was completely opposite of what type of guy Laura Jean would fall for.  I was definitely wrong about that he surprised me in the end.

Scarlet & Robin Hood

dress by Versace

I picked the fox for Scarlet because she is stealthy and her skills come in handy when breaking into places in the series.  She is always cunning, clever, adaptable, and focused while on the job. Scarlet is also very passionate, which is why I chose the red fox. She may not be a fan of the heels though, and would take them off at some point in the night.

Well I hope you had as much fun reading about the couples and their costumes as I had when styling them!! Oh and you can bet that several of the ladies are armed to the teeth under those evening gowns.

Also here’s a special bonus from my original blog post idea asking authors to have their characters pulling pranks on each other. Many thanks to Becky Albertalli for taking the time to fill this out !!

Prankster: Blue
Victim: Simon
Location: Spier family residence
The Prank: Toothpaste in place of Oreo creme
Reason: To encourage kissable breath

hipsterdBecky Albertalli is a clinical psychologist who has had the privilege of conducting therapy with dozens of smart, weird, irresistible teenagers. She also served for seven years as co-leader of a support group for gender nonconforming children in Washington, DC. These days, she lives in Atlanta with her husband and two sons, and writes very nerdy contemporary young adult fiction.  Her debut novel, SIMON VS. THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA, from Balzer + Bray/HarperCollins is out now!
