Synopsis:

Nicolette’s awful stepsisters call her “Mechanica” to demean her, but the nickname fits: she learned to be an inventor at her mother’s knee. Her mom is gone now, though, and the Steps have turned her into a servant in her own home.

But on her sixteenth birthday, Nicolette discovers a secret workshop in the cellar and begins to dare to imagine a new life for herself. Could the mysterious books and tools hidden there—and the mechanical menagerie, led by a tiny metal horse named Jules—be the key to escaping her dreary existence? With a technological exposition and royal ball on the horizon, the timing might just be perfect for Nicolette to earn her freedom at last.

Gorgeous prose and themes of social justice and family shine in this richly imagined Cinderella retelling about an indomitable inventor who finds her prince . . . but realizes she doesn’t want a fairy tale happy ending after all.

Why We’re Waiting:

Kelly:

My most recent genre love has been Steampunk. I just finished reading Rebel Mechanics by Shanna Swendson not too long ago and I absolutely adored it! It was my first Steampunk and I’m really eager to try more! Plus… If I have to pick a princess, than Cinderella is definitely my favorite. I’m very excited to see what Betsy Cornwell has done with this retelling and how she has managed to fit Steampunk into the classic fairytale of every little girl’s dreams.

Melissa:

This book had me at Cinderella! I do love a good fairytale retelling plus the fact that it’s steampunk.  I have yet to dabble in this genre, but I have a few I am dying to read including Mechanica. I’m interested to see how Betsy puts a spin on a classic fairytale. I mean who doesn’t want a fairytale happy ending? Also, can we just look at this gorgeous cover!  I love the color scheme and the whimsical steampunk feel it has.

Lauren:

When it comes to retellings, you can already guarantee I want to read it! I really enjoy a well written twist to a classic story, and Cinderella is one of my favorites. The cover is absolutely gorgeous and the summary sounds pretty intriguing. I haven’t read much steampunk novels yet and I would really like to start getting into that genre. This sounds like a good one to enter the steampunk world with! I can’t wait to see how Betsy Cornwell has written this retelling and what she has in store for us.
