Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books From My Younger Years

My Top Ten Books From My Younger Years That I Would Love To Revisit!

This Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by Broke and Bookish! =)

This is decently exciting!! I can already feel the nostalgia making it’s way through my brain! YAYY… kind of… hahah =) I’m doing books from all over my kid years, so here goes nothing!

1. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

Because honestly… how could you not?!

2. Bloody Jack by L. A. Meyer

Jackie is still one of my favorite female characters EVER. I don’t think I will ever love a character as much as I did her… although Celaena Sardothien is coming very, very close! I will be revisiting this series eventually in order to close it out! The last book came out recently, in time for Meyer to pass away. His memory is forever preserved in this beautiful, adventurous, witty series.

3. The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare

I used to LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book! It was one of my very first reads in the historical/somewhat *fantastical* genre! Plus, Kit is the kind of character who just doesn’t fit in where she was placed and no matter how hard she tries, she has her own identity and sticks to it without fear. Love that fire in her!

4. Marked by P.C. Cast and Kristen Cast

I already know that I’ll be revisiting this entire series. It’s a definite. I fell so hard for the drama and all of the characters in this series. They are all so wonderful and I just kept crying and laughing and crying and laughing. It’s a wild ride, but one worth staying around for!

5. A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray

I still clearly remember the opening to this series. I’ve read it twice already. It’s one of my favorites, combining both female power, historical fiction, and fantasy into one! did you all know that just about every character, protagonist, antagonist, etc., in this series is FEMALE?! And it was still amazing!!! How awesome is that?!

6. Unearthly by Cynthia Hand

This is a slightly more recent one (I probably read this when I was 16??? Maybe???), but it remains one of my favorites to this day. I can’t promote this book enough. Cynthia takes angels to a new height and twist with this trilogy. It should be read and shared by the millions!

7. The Giver by Lois Lowry

I used to try to read this during science class. I’d put it under the desk and read it until I got yelled at by my teacher. I was so caught up in it. I’d love to give it a re-read and see if I fall in the same kind of love with it all over again. ❤

8. The Host by Stephanie Meyer

This is another more recent (probably 17???) read. It still, to this day, remains one of my favorites. I shout this book from the roof tops. The movie was horrible, but the book is a true story of human survival and the meaning of humanity. It’s beautiful, honestly.

9. Get that Girl out of the Boys Locker Room by Elaine Moore

Going WAYYYYY back, I read this book multiple times. It was my first really strong female character! It’s about a girl who joins the football team in middle school and defies all the boys and their stereotypes for her. I couldn’t get enough of it because, lets face it, I’m still constantly trying to beat boys into the ground when they think they’re better than me. Nothing like a swift kick of a kickball to make them shut their traps… especially if it’s perfectly aimed low…

10. Creole by Stephen Cosgrove

Going even further back, before I was even in kindergarten, this was the book I always demanded that my mom read to me before bed. It’s a beautiful children’s book about an ugly dinosaur-like creature learning to accept herself for who she is, and about her friends learning to see her inner beauty and not judge on her outer shell. This is one book I’d love to be able to find again. It’s been lost through the years, but I still remember it. If there was one book I want to be able to pass on to my own children, it’s this one…

Creole

What do you all think? Any of our lists match? Are there any that you would love to read? Any recommendations for me?!

So that wraps up for today! Make sure to stop by and check out my two giveaways happening on the blog right now! One for Andrea Cefalo’s The Fairytale Keeper series, and another for a UK edition of A Court of Thorns and Roses! Have fun!

I hope you all have a WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL week ahead of you! Stay safe, warm, and happy. =)

  1. I FREAKING LOVED THE WITCH OF BLACKBIRD POND! My aunt worked at the publisher and always got a ton of free books for me including a hardcover of that book which totally rocked my world. I wound up giving away that copy at some point and have yet to find the cover. BUT I do have a new paperback that is lovely (some of the interim covers . . . yuck).

    • Notice how I used the cover that I still have and love and read from?! Hahah, I LOVEEEEEEEDDDDDD that book! that’s awesome that your aunt used to work a publisher!! =) Oh man, what I wouldn’t give to be able to work at a publisher and be a sorter type of person who goes through and reads all the manuscripts everyday. 😉

  2. We already talked about this on Twitter, but I never miss an opportunity to book-push Tamora Pierce. I hope you find time to read her Tortall books! His Dark Materials series is also fantastic, one that I read/audiobooked repeatedly growing up. (Try not to judge it by the movie!)

A Great And Terrible Beauty is SUCH a good book/series. I really need to do a re-read or listen to the audiobooks soon. I remember that the last book came out just after Christmas one year, on the day my family drove back home from my grandparents’ house. I forced my parents to stop at a bookstore on our way out of town, and then I spent the entire 10-hour drive reading. It was worth feeling carsick the entire time!

    • I NEVER hear anyone else talk about her!! I’m assuming Tortall is your favorite?! I’ll have to check it out! =) Haha I lovedddd A Great and Terrible Beauty. I used to be able to read in the car all the time, but unfortunately, the older I got, the more car sick I got too. =((((((( I miss it!

  3. I mean obviously Harry Potter who doesn’t love HP?! A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray! The females were so kick-ass! I read this trilogy back-to-back and I honestly couldn’t put it down!! All of the secrets and undiscovered powers were so interesting to unveil! This series is pretty much the definition of a page-turner!!

    • AH-GREED!!! I loved that the series was based around basically all girls. The protagonists, antagonists, everyone, FEMALE! I was so in love with it. It was one of my very first fantasy series. =) I miss it! I’ll have to re-read it soon! I’m glad so many of you like it and I’m not alone!!!! <333

  4. I actually reread A Great and Terrible Beauty last year and loved it just as much the second time around! Libba Bray is a fantastic writer and that series is so original to me. I never got around to rereading Rebel Angels but I would like to. 😛

I could never finish the Marked series. D: I think I got to book 3 or 4 and just never got around to finishing the series, and now there are so many books I’m basically terrified of them. I don’t have time to read 12 books! Eek.

I’d have to say my childhood books vary. The Magic Treehouse series, Harry Potter, and a lot of Scott Westerfeld’s books were the books of my childhood.

    • I definitely need to re-read AGaTB soon! I never finished the Marked series or the Bloody Jack series, just because both are SO LONG, but I absolutely loved both of them. I’d like to eventually get all of the books and read them all in one huge binge! The plus side is that each of those books is probably a third the size of Heir of Fire. I think of it as really only 4 or 5 books. You can totally do it! 😉

The Magic Treehouse?! What is this!?!?

  6. Shout out to A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray! 😀 That series was the bomb (dot) com when I was in middle school. That, and THG, Diary of a Wimpy Kid (so dumb but so relatable), and The Bartimaeus Trilogy. Have you checked out Bray’s Diviner series yet?

    • Oh my gosh, I taught The Giver to my 7th graders, but I was only able to teach them through chapter 8. Then it was time for me to graduate and leave them. I WAS SO UPSET! But the discussion day I had about The Giver and their perfect society on my last day there is still one of my favorite memories. =)

  8. I was reading through your blog and stopped immediately at Harry Potter………. MY LIFE! Planning to ink that in my skin soon somehow. And read each novel again. Maybe revisit some fanfic I wrote….. But shh that’s a secret. (As you can see, Harry Potter takes my concentration from 100 to zero.)
